We’re a week away from Halloween (October 31) and we thought of compiling some the best, scariest and most haunting horror films produced. The internet contains a lot of information where to find the list of horror movies we’re looking. Rotten tomatoes, IMDB and individual blogs provided the list but not the “exact” movies we’re looking for. You see, some of the movies in the top were either “too old” that it won’t even scare your dog. Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho, Rosemary’s baby are some of the best selling horror novel and movies at their time.
It is frustrating to see that most top grossing horror films today are either about slashing or psycho killers. The plot has different characters but their main storyline are all the same. We want to see something unique, something that would make you shiver and cover your eyes/ears and not the same boring (Ngoorrk) slasher movie or teenage gang being outrun by a “undying” psycho.
Thus, instead of searching for horror films in the internet what we did was to recall the horror movies we watched. We compiled the 10 best horror movies that would make you “pee” in your pants. You probably have watched some of them, check them out.
1. Ring / Ringu (1998) – a Japanese horror mystery film about a cursed video tape that, when watched, will cause the viewer to receive an eerie phone call then die 7 days after. The film featured a different genre of horror movie production by mixing sounds, sound effects and presentation of “Sadako” (antagonist of the movie). Ringu didn’t use blood, slashing and the same boring effects of today’s horror movies but scared the hell out of many people.
2. Ring 0: Birthday / Ringu 0: Bāsudei (2000) – a Japanese Horror film and the prequel to the film Ring/Ringu. The film described the life of Sadako Yamamura and how she would later turn to become the horrifying antagonist “Sadako”. Here, viewers will feel pity for Sadako after much suffering from people who hates her. This film in a sense, justified Sadako’s wrath and wanton murder of other people via their own fear.
3. The Exorcism of Emily Rose – a horror film about demonic possession. The plot is based on Anneliese Michel, a German girl who was said to be possessed by demons and subsequently went exorcism. The movie described the suffering of a young girl tormented by 7 “ancient” demons. The witching hour of “3 am” or what they call the “devil’s hour is the signal for the demons to ravage Emily and submit to their whims.
4. The sixth sense – the movie featuring Bruce Willis and Haley Joel Osment. The story is about Cole Sear (Osment), a kid who has the ability to see and talk to the dead. Willis portrayed the psychologist who will help Osment on his undertakings. A surprise twist happened when Bruce Willis discovered (via the help of Osment) that he already passed away.
5. Omen (1976) – a British horror film about the anti-christ’s birth into this world. Damien Thorn, the boy anti-christ will play as the main antagonist of this film. Missionaries and other people would try to kill Damien in hope to stop the reign of the anti-christ only to suffer the ultimate punishment – Death. Other sequels of the movie are also good and worth to watch.
6. The Shutter (2004) – this Thailand horror movie was adapted by the Americans, with the same title, but not as good (scary) as the Thailand version. The story is about a man who is tormented by a girl he killed in a car accident. The girl haunts the man because of it via “creepy” images developed from his camera.
7. The Exorcist – a 1970s horror film depicting a girl possessed by demons. You might notice that horror movies such as the exorcist has several remakes and versions but as always the original “tends” to be the best (but not always). We have featured 3 films centered on demonic possessions but if you’ll take a closer look, the style, effects and story lines have different twists that make them unique.
8. 13 Ghosts (2001) – a remake of the 1960 horror film with the same name. Remember what I’ve said before? “the original tends to be the best”, well this time the remake is better in terms of quality, effects and overall feel of the movie. The movie is about a haunted house “filled” with ghosts and the only way to see them is by wearing a special glass. They are “happily” contained in their cage until the gates are opened. Of course, chaos happens next.
9. One missed call/ Chakushin ari (2004)- a Japanese horror movie famous for its trademark “ringtone of death”. The story is centered on “jap” mobile tone receiving creepy messages in their voice mails (chakushin). The anomaly is that the sender of this message came from the same phone number but dated several days in the future. The message contains the voice of the phone owner… dying.
10. Event Horizon (1997) – a british science fiction horror film describing a lost starship with the same name. After 7 years a strange signal coming from the ship, Event Horizon was picked up by Earth satellites.. A mission team was dispatched to track the lost starship only to find a horrifying discovery. For the sake of our geek readers, the term Event Horizon exists and it is the boundary surrounding a black hole.

Come On!!! Japanese horror is so overrated… It’s the same plot every time, pissed off girl ghost getting revenge… So unoriginal… Try some Italian horror, Argento, Bava, or even Fulci…
