Recently, giant squid have been surfacing in California, especially on Newport Beach. They are a lot bigger than most squid, weighing up to 60 pounds or 27 kilos. Many fishermen in that live in that area are interested in these creatures and have been catching them by the hundreds.
They were first spotted last week, and ever since then fishermen have been booking early morning fishing trips to try and nab these giant squid before anyone else. There are two main reasons that fishermen come to get these rare specimen. Firstly, there are those who want to get the squid for food to sell or eat as a delicacy. Other than those, there are sports anglers who just want to catch the giant squid for the fight that they put on.
The squid certainly do put up a fight, they do their best to escape and sometimes even spray ink on everyone on the boat. This could be why people find it so entertaining to try and catch them. Reports say that around 400 giant squid have been caught since Friday night. The squids’ weight ranges from 20-40 pounds and sometimes 60 though they can grow up to 100 pounds. The giant squid’s name is the Humboldt squid, which is known to squirt ink as a defensive measure.
