Google – a catch-all term for searching the internet.
The American Dialect Society, an association that studies the English language, has named “google”, the verb, not the noun, the word of the decade. The selection of this word can be compared to the selection of a Person of the Decade. Criteria are set for it to be conferred of the “Mightiest Title”.
Tweets, blog, google – words that are product of Information age. The former are products of social networking sites while the latter is a dictionary in the spotlight. It is the act of searching for something online using a search engine where anything and everything will be brought right at the tip of your noses.
From the tiniest detail of something to something new to someone can be googled. This word has got a lot to offer and has a long way to go to broadcast anything.
A simple word that is so powerful. It has the ability to satisfy the curiosity of anything. It was voted as the most useful word used in almost every sector of our society – politics, media, environment, etc. It is even used to give hope to the hopeless, once men and women have finally stopped searching for answers, now google can give it to them. It even revolutionized business, technology and culture.
“It’s hard to imagine life before we were Googling,” American Dialect Society executive council member Ben Zimmer told CBSNews.com.
Yes indeed, imagine those life when we have to run to a public library to research for something, when you were less tied to your laptops, imagine people not knowing your life’s details, your working and sleeping habits and even your intimate details. There are pros and cons before we were googling, but we have to accept now the beauty of this word. How it changes the society we are living in right now, how it affects social relations of individuals as well as their perspectives on life. It’s like the concept of friendship changing from time to time.
Google brings access to knowledge to anyone now, every man and woman can all sit down at an electronic device to find what we need to make our lives better.
And if you think you should get more out of google – try googling google!
