The Nobel Prize voting has started to roll! Who would you vote? Better yet what will you vote? Wired Italy editors have nominated this innovative technology to be awarded the Nobel Prize for the simple fact that it has given way to found a new type of society. But are we really ready to break the usual tradition of the Nobel Prize award that is why we have the Internet as one of the nominees? Is it even worth it to have the Internet even nominated? Before you think that Internet can indeed be worth the award let’s think what the good things the Internet has done, was there even?
The nomination is backed up by Nicholas Negroponte, OLPC founder. He claims that the Internet is more than qualified for the prize simply because it has been a way to spread awareness for dialogue, debate and consensus. But is this enough to have the Internet be one of the nominees? The Nobel Prize is a reward given to a group or an individual that has done something heroic for the community or even the world (well for the past generation so to speak)! The Nobel Prize is originally an award given for any achievement regarding Chemistry, Physics, Physiology, Medicine, Peace and Literature so why the heck did Internet get in?
I would have to agree that the Internet doesn’t deserve to be in the Nobel Prize nominees for this year. It was probably included because of politics and influences among internet billionaires behind it – I hold no grudges on them just stating my own perspective. Okay you may agree that the Internet deserve it? Fine! Can you tell me what is so noble about it then? It defeats the purpose of the price honestly.
Internet may be a good source of awareness and knowledge but it’s also a great means for malicious content and everything that you can worry about! Name what can of mishap I’m sure the Internet has it one way or another. The Nobel Prize awarding will be held soon (actually by December) and if you really want to make a difference you may vote for the Internet as the deserving candidate for this year’s award (I’m being sarcastic really).
