A video on YouTube have caught the attention of some web browsers. It’s the video of a 22 year old girl named Krystin who apparently is an addict, neither to drugs nor alcohol but in eating chalk. Yes you’ve heard it right Kristin has this unusual habit of eating a chalk.

As shown in the video, Krystin seems to really enjoy her chalk eating habit. Her friend and sisters even tried eating chalk to know what makes Kristin so addicted with it. But Krystin’s sisters and friend doesn’t find the chalk addictive at all.
Krystin seems to have Pica, which is a medical disorder characterized by having an appetite for substance that are largely nutritive like clay, coal, coins, soil, paper, feces, soap and Krystin’s favorite chalk. Pica comes from the Latin word for magpie which happens to be a bird that eats almost anything.
This disorder is said to be present if the person has been eating the substance for more than one month at an age where it’s already inappropriate. This is just normal for toddlers and children who always want to put everything in their mouth, but when it is done by an adult it may indicate that the person has pica.
Pica may appear on all ages regardless of gender. This disorder is very dangerous for children especially those with autism or other mental disorder. They might get poisoned for what they put in their mouth. Pica may also appear in animals particularly with dogs.
Research shows that Pica is a condition brought about by a mineral deficiency which in many cases turns out to be a deficiency in iron. Based on some studies, most often than not the substance being eaten by the person with pica contains the substance in which the person eating it has a deficiency. However pica is not recognized as a mental order in the Diagnostic and Statistics Manual of Mental Disorders.
According to some research and studies, pica may also be a result of stress that is associated with a traumatic event which may include child abuse, parental separation, poor parent-child relationship and the like. Whether pica is caused by an iron deficiency or stress, it is very clear that a person suffering from it needs medical attention.
Treatment for pica differs and will be based on the patient’s category. It starts with a screening process to find out what causes the disorder and then the proper remedy or treatment shall be applied.
Krystin is not the only one suffering from pica, there are some people who have it too but are not aware that they have this problem. If you know someone like Krystin, advice that person to consult a doctor before it’s too late.

I'm not addicted to chalk but I will eat it to help settle my stomach if I don't have tums. It's kind of weird to do so, but it seems to work almost as well as tums.
