People have to remember that being part of a social network means that they have to be socially responsible with the activities that they do online because first, you can’t take back what you have said and done; second, whatever you say or do affects other people; and third, your posts tell a lot about you.

Facebook, one of the most popular social networking sites in the world is a source of a lot of controversies due to its very interactive nature. Recently, a mother was investigated by police for posting a photo of her son “smoking” on her Facebook account. The mom, Rebecca Davey who is 18 years old lives in Essex, United Kingdom.

She made her six-month-old son, baby Ollie pose for a photo with an unlit cigarette in his mouth and then posting it on her Facebook account afterwards. After seeing the photo, several of her contacts or online friends were concerned that this might be evidence for inappropriate childcare and immediately reported her to the police. Upon inquiry of the authorities, Rebecca updated her Facebook status saying: “Some w****** reported me to the police abwt picture off ollie.”

Davey’s friends gave support to their teenage friend by posting their sympathetic comments such as: “Some ppl r nosey f****** aint they!! dw ur a good mum they wont hassle u 4 long!!!”Reports from the Essex police and social services after their visit to Davey’s home in Southland stated that they have found “no immediate concerns” but have given the teenage mother applicable advice. Later on, the controversial photo was taken down of the site.

This example goes to show that if you would like to get yourself out of trouble, you must take into consideration the items that you post into your social networking account. It will impinge on your relationships with yourself and others, so be careful and be responsible.
