Pat Robertson, a well-known Televangelist has founded numerous organizations and corporations such as the Christian Broadcasting Network (CBN) and Operation Blessing International Relief and Development Corporation. He is known to be very much outspoken when it comes to his beliefs relating to faith, affairs of state and controversies. Recently, he once again made the headlines, this time tackling the recent earthquake in Haiti. He said during his day time show, the 700 club, that the Haitians made a pact with the devil to free them of the French colonization.
“Something happened a long time ago in Haiti, and people might not want to talk about it,” he said on Christian Broadcasting Network’s “The 700 Club.” “They were under the heel of the French. You know, Napoleon III, or whatever. And they got together and swore a pact to the devil. They said, we will serve you if you’ll get us free from the French. True story. And so, the devil said, okay it’s a deal.”
This statement as expected, quickly triggered worldwide outrage. A few hours after the news broke out, Haitian Ambassador to the US, Mr. Raymond Joseph addressed this concern by accepting an invitation by MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow Show. He said, “I would like the whole world to know, America especially, that the independence of Haiti, when the slaves rose up against the French, the US was able to gain the Louisiana territory for $15 million.
That’s 3 cents an acre. That’s 13 states west of the Mississippi…What pact the Haitians made with the devil has helped make the United States become what it is.” He was clearly angry, but as a diplomat, he chose to be diplomatic in tone. In addition, in his daily press briefing on January 14, 2010, White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs said of Robertson’s commentary: “It never ceases to amaze that in times of amazing human suffering somebody says something that could be so utterly stupid.”
His remarks is just one of the many previous claims and attacks such as his comments regarding the Iraq War, Ariel Sharon, Asians, Hindus, Islam and Muslims. See Series of “interesting” Pat Robertson related videos below.
