Wouldn’t it be nice for parents to know that the school to which they have enrolled their kids will also supply the children with a much needed laptop? And what if these laptops can also be brought home, it would effectively lessen the worries of the parents since they don’t need to spend some more hard-earned money for a computer at home.
In a well of suburb in Pennsylvania can be found the Lower Merion School District which operates on a motto that says they are building the future police state. From this district belongs the Harriton High School. It is known that the school supplies laptops to their students and only these laptops can be used inside the premises of the school. These laptops they distribute to students were equipped with webcams that are impossibly hard to turn off or deactivate due to the software that came with the shipped hardware. This specific nature of the devices is meant to locate some stolen laptops, according to the school district.
This purpose however is not what was interpreted when a student was called by the assistant principal in his office for behaving improperly at home . This allegation by the vice principal is based on pictures and shots taken using the webcam of the laptop that can be remotely accessed by the school administration.
Why question a student’s behavior when he or she is at home. It is only the behavior of the students while inside the school premises that school officials should guard. When these kids are already in their homes, watching them via a remote webcam is a totally different story. Apparently, the incident has grown to a point where there now a lawsuit filed against the school district by Blake Robbins, et al.
Invasion of privacy, is the charges set against the school and school district in question. The intention of remotely accessing the laptop brought home may be genuine because the school needs to protect its property. But to turn it on whatever time the administrator wishes to do so is a serious invasion of privacy.
