The world always loves new innovation in every corner. Excitement comes when a fellow Filipino develop a new tool that is original and provides unique services that caters the needs of the majority.
Now, we are a bit baffled with a copycat “twitter” already scratching the surface of facebook pages. To our disappointment, it was a Filipino version of twitter called “Twinoy”.
We have always been a believer that pinoys can excel and can cope with techno-geeks around the globe; however, the first 5 minutes of browsing twinoy was horrible. We thought it was a new twitter with distinctive services. Well, it was worse than we expected.
Twinoy use laconi.ca (an open-source organization known to have 1 click installation for micro-blogging platforms to create fantastic socio-network in a breeze). Laconi.ca is always modified to suite the user’s needs. ![]()
Now, it seems Twinoy developers are too sluggish to modify laconi.ca. We even doubt if these folks invest some time in tweaking laconi.ca to provide unique features for pinoys. If twinoy’s goal was to create a new TWITTER for FILIPINOS then this is certainly not the way to go.
Here is the print screen of identi.ca (a unmodified demo of laconi.ca) and Twinoy
Guys could you see any differences except for the color and ads?
The funny thing is when you visit twinoy, a statement in their header are requesting fellow Filipinos something like this:
Would you like to help us let other Pinoys know Twinoy exist? Click Here to use our new contact importer and invite them. Support towards building a vibrant Pinoy community is greatly appreciated.
Hello Philippines! How can we promote something that is a complete replica of twitter and doesn’t provide any new services at all?
Guys we ask you this: Do you think it’s better if Twinoy developers created a twitter-application that let pinoys connect to a special portal in twitter.com solely for the Filipino community instead of building a separate social-networking site? In that way the reach to fellow pinoys around the globe is very doable, quick and more publicize.
Maybe folks who constructed twinoy were more interested in generating money through ads than concentrating on improving the connection of pinoys with one another. ![]()
Twinoy was released in an open-source development but it doesn’t mean it will only rely from other people to improve their work. The source was a copycat, that fact alone makes it disappointing to improve.
Remember Mozilla? A mogul open-source community that started from scratch. Today, it’s flocked by programmers alike to improve it. Why? Because its simply one-of-a-kind.
If there was a “cyber-freddie aguilar” critique, we will not be surprised if he will call the developers of twinoy as MONKEYS… ouch
