US President Obama’s ‘I pledge’ video: Best or Worst?

change thumb US President Obama’s ‘I pledge’ video: Best or Worst?I was skimming over my Yahoo! page when I noticed this article about a video featuring various Hollywood celebrities including Ashton Kutcher, Demi Moore, Cameron Diaz etc. The interesting thing about it was that it was actually a PSA (Public Service Announcement) video about US President Obama’s vision of change for America.

The video known as an “I pledge” video was a stream of interviews with different American celebrities telling what they pledge to do for the betterment of U.S. and the world. The subject was quite broad as it tackled food crises, illnesses (find cure to alzheimer’s and other mental sickness and autism), be a responsible citizen, show love to your environment by reducing the use of plastic and using hybrid cars as well as to end slavery.

Towards the end of the video, celebrities challenged each and everyone to state their pledge and stand to do it.

Little did I know that this same video is causing a “buzz” around America today. But, unfortunately it was a negative one. Parents were complaining about Demi Moore’s comment towards the end of the video saying:

I pledge…. to be a servant to our President (Barrack Obama) ,

Actor, Ashton kutcher ended it with, “and all mankind”

It was all over the news and the internet. Parents said that they should be “forewarned about the video’s tone and content”. A principal even apologized about showing this video to kids at school saying that “she didn’t see the video first hand before letting the kids see it”.

Try watching the video yourself before we go into something else.

Why ‘fuzz’ over it?

I watched the video 5x and I must say that it was well prepared and nicely edited. The music background and editing of the video to make the presentation achieve a “collage” effect was good. What was more compelling about it, for me, was the message each of the celebrities mentioned.

People will be drawn, for sure, to watch the video from start to finish because of these famous personalities. What could be better and more compelling way to advertise a product than to use a famous actor or actress? Nothing.

To me what Demi Moore said by being “a servant to the President” only means that she is willing to partake on whatever President Obama wanted for everyone, CHANGE. She is volunteering herself to be one of Obama’s ambassador of his dream for U.S.

These parents and individuals who have “blown” up this issue were focusing on the wrong direction. I guess they are too conservative and narrow minded that they didn’t see the whole context of the video. They just jumped into a bad conclusion because of a single statement. Too critical.

It’s all about what you say

The power of the english (and any) language is great. In today’s world that news could spread faster than a bush fire, what you say is what people think about you.It can be both constructive and destructive at the same time depending on how you deliver your “pitch”. So choose carefully.
