As we all know communication is one of the most important part of our lifestyle as human beings. We are born to mingle, interact and be sociable with one another. Unfortunately, some people don’t have a clue that words coming out of their mouth annoy those who hear them.
Various people were surveyed by an American University to know which words they think were irritating to hear. This information is very helpful for you and will give you a hint what you should say next. You could be in a meeting, a job interview, business deal or just making a social conversation, always remember: words that you say may build or hurt you.
So what is the most annoying word of all?
“whatever”
Americans were surveyed and found out that 47% thought that the word “whatever” was the most annoying of all. Whatever is the slang for the term Whatever you say. This word is used to dismiss a previous statement and express indifference/apathy.
“whatever” is frequently heard on popular movies casting socialite girls and spoiled young women. The movie and T.V. series Clueless featuring Alicia Silverstone is a great example. In Bubble gang – a popular comedy series in the Philippines – this is one of Angelina’s (Ogie Alcacid) favorite term.
Did you know that this word was also used as a label for a soft drink by a Singaporean company? (cool?)
Also, several songs and music albums have used this word on their compositions. People found it to be annoying regardless of age, gender, race or status. For some, the word may not sound offensive depending on the tone and manner it was pronounced.
Other annoying words/terms you should know
“Whatever” is the top most annoying words but other “finalists” are worth mentioning.
1. “you know” – which garnered 25% of the votes
2. “it is what it is” – garnered 11% of the people’s votes
3. “anyway” – got 7%
4. “at the end of the day” – 2% of the votes
The power of the English language is great that you should mind how you use these words in public. Some of them are not “bad” to hear, the term at the end of the day is often use to summarize what someone have accomplished on a particular period or it may signify an objective completed. Just remember to be conscious on how you deliver them because it would either make you look like a million dollar man or a first class nagger. (source: wikipedia, AP)
Just for laughs
We cannot resist not to include the commercial video of Manny Pacquiao – the Filipinos’ Champ – on Vit water. It doesn’t sound irritating nor annoying but try to count how many “you know” he mentioned.
