In Huntsville, Alabama last Friday, a woman has reportedly opened fire at some point in a faculty meeting at the University of Alabama Huntsville campus. This shooting resulted to the death of three biology professors and left three other employees with injury.
Some student identified the suspect as Amy Bishop, who herself is an instructor and researcher at the academe. The exact location of the incident was in the Shelby Centre, a math and science classroom building. “It didn’t happen. There’s no way …. they are still alive.”, were the word heard from her when Bishop was taken in handcuffs last Friday night. She had reportedly started shooting after she learned that no tenure would be granted to her. A tenure means that a professor is guaranteed a position provided that there are no grounds for him or her to be fired.
The dead victims were Gopi K. Podila, the chairman of the Department of Biological Sciences, and two other faculty members, Maria Ragland Davis and Adriel Johnson. The wounded victims were named department members Luis Cruz-Vera, Joseph Leahy and staffer Stephanie Monticello.
No charges have yet been filed, according to police authorities who were interviewing and interrogating the female suspect together with another man who I identified as ‘person of interest’.
