american labor day 300x300 American Labor Day Today | News UpdateToday in the United States, the average workman is celebrating Labor Day. A federal holiday conceived in 1894 to glorify the “the strength and esprit de corps of the trade and labor organizations”. It was suppose to be a festival for the workers, their families and their jobs.

But recently, what is to celebrate? A lot of people had lost their jobs and more than a million more have their lives on a standstill. The holiday which is celebrated every first Monday of September has been widely accepted as the day for workers. But without work, you can feel the frown on almost everyone’s face when asked about Labor Day.

For the month of August alone, statistics show that the unemployment rate is at 9.6% with an additional 7.1% as under employed. With only 67,000 new jobs in the private sector, the problem facing the country right now is that the current job placements on average cannot compete with the growing population rate. On average, the country needs to have at least 125,000 new jobs to accommodate old and new workers alike each month.

There is no clear consensus within the government to create a transparent stimulus for opening of new jobs or for any plans whatsoever until the senatorial and congressional elections on November. Voters will likely decide on the issue and hope that in the next Labor Day will not be as dreary as today.
