Looking back at the horrible macabre that happened last February 17, one couldn’t get over on how a 200-pound chimpanzee ripped the parts of a helpless woman piece by piece. Yesterday on Oprah, viewers had witnessed the victim who survived the atrocious attack. Looking at her disconfigured face was really heartbreaking and very graphic at the same time. Her story aren’t for the faint of heart.

Reminisce: It’s said that Charla Nash, 55, lost her nose, eyes and jaw as the crazed simian ate her alive in the driveway of her friend’s Stamford, Conn. His voice shaky, her twin brother, Mike Nash, thanked the four teams of specialists who performed more than seven hours of surgery.

Kevin Miller, the doctor who treated Nash in the ER, said: “The monkey had ripped off her entire upper jaw, had ripped off her nose, which was hanging by a thread,” he told ABC News. “We found extensive dirt, chimp fur and chimp teeth implanted in her bone.” Nash lost both hands in the attack, and doctors surgically removed her eyes.

“The team of doctors and staff battled around the clock to stabilize Charla,” he said inside Stamford Hospital. The scene was very horrific even medical staff who did the operation needed trauma-rehabiltation. Nash’s attacker, a 14-year-old, 200-pound chimpanzee named Travis, was killed by the police during the event.

Here’s the audio-clip taken from the accident wherein Nash’s friend (Sandra Herold) is calling 911 and getting too hysterical as she sees her friend being ripped by the Chimpanzee:

The callous and calm voice of the 911 operator, who’s name was not disclosed to the public, got a proper bashing from comments given by viewers in youtube. Saying he is, “inhumane, inconsiderate, like a robot etc”.

On Oprah’s interview, Nash describe her feelings about the horrible event that changed her life forever.

She said, she feels no pain but that she tries not to touch her face so as to avoid knowing the full extent of her injuries.

“I don’t ask a whole lot about my injuries… I know that I have my forehead,” she said. She now drinks her meals “with a straw through a small hole where her mouth used to be,” ABC added.

“Only . . . in the past couple of weeks did she realize that she no longer had eyes, because she had been saying that she was hoping to be able to see at some point,” Oprah said, according to the New York Post.

She says she wears the veil “so I don’t scare people. And sometimes other people might insult you.”. See pictures below (On the left- Chandra Nash before the attack, On the right – Nash on veil, Below – Chandra’s face after the attack)

Here’s the excerpt of Oprah’s interview:

I don’t know what are the people’s reaction about the unveling of Charla’s face to the public but it sure made some of the viewers feel guilty and asked, “Why did Oprah need to show her face like that ?” Even the so-called action was done on a “classy-way, it was still objectionable and somehow it looked like a form of exploitation.

Updates as of Nov. 13, 2009: It seems not only us are thinking Oprah shouldn’t have unveiled the face of charla for public viewing. In fact today, Oprah called BFF Gayle King’s Sirius Radio show to discuss what are reasons why did she do the unveiling. Here’s the excerpt from the audio conversation plus a video-clip from Sirius Radio.

“There was great concern as to how to show the face, whether to show the face, and how to do it,” Oprah said. “And I finally thought that she has to live with it. First of all, she wanted to show it, and she has to live with it, so how dare us think…because we even considered, ‘Should we blot out the face? Should you blur the face?’ And then i said no, we’re not gonna do that, because it’s more important for us to not have to look at her than for her to be willing to show it? That’s not right.”

So what are your reactions about this story?

I wouldn't have shot the monkey. Well, just to slow it down…Then I would have gotten a machete…

    • MikeLinPA says:

Do you realize that the chimp was shot six times by the office who arrived on the scene, and the chimp was still able to run back into the house before dieing? That chimp would have taken that machette away from you and mauled you too!

PS this is what Chimps do to each other in the wild when they fight to the death. Chimps actually have been documented going on organized war parties against stray members of other colonies, and they victems are mauled in the same way.

  2. [...] People just love never ending controversies and juicy scandals. Keep em coming!  Do you think Oprah or Ellen will have Carrie a guest on their show? Who will be next to lash out this girl? [...]

  3. Lisa says:

This was and is such a tragic sitution, for the woman who was attacked, for the woman who owned the chimp and for the the chimp itself. There should be a law everywhere in the U.S. that makes it illegal to own wild animals as pets!!!!!!!! Stop blaming all three involved. When will those in power be blamed? Wake up people!

    • correct person says:

Don't be so naive, putting a law in place won't stop people from keeping these pets. the woman should have known better than to keep a wild animal. her fault.

    • Cole says:

"the 911 operato … got a proper bashing from comments"

Everytime a 911 tape is released, people rip on the operator. People don't understand how 911 works. There is a CALL TAKER and a DISPATCHER. They are linked by computers. As the call is being taken, the call taker enters the information and simultaneously the dispatcher sends police/fire/medical. As soon as you call and say what the emergency is, police are dispatched. The operator did everything right. What do you want the call taker to do, start freaking out? Uh, no. They stay calm and cool so that they can get as much info as possible relayed to the police on the way.

I think Oprah did the right thing in showing the woman's face. The photos are going to get out someday anyway so instead of living in hiding, Charla chose to reveal her face to the world on her terms & with dignity. The sooner we all get used to it & learn to accept the appearance of the disfigured, the better off they'll be. Charla is a hero & has more business showing her face in public & holding her head up high than most of us.

  6. Lexie says:

how can gayle and oprah effin laugh about it like its freaking no big deal… and OH GOD!!! Oprah wiped her face… she must be a saint…. give me an effin break… shes disgusting and her nasty lesbian lover is too!!

    They are so freaking fake!!!!

  7. Molly says:

Am I the only one who thinks that the surgeons did a crappy job of putting her face back together? What was with the big blob where her nose used to be? There are cadaver bones, facial implants, and much , much more that can/should have been done. Did they even bother to call in a plastic surgeon who specializes in facial reconstruction, or were they waiting to see if she would live first? I hope this is just step one of twenty.

    • MikeLinPA says:

The picture you see probably still has massive swelling that will recede as time goes on. Also, I am no expert, but I am guessing that the first goal was to get all the massive wounds closed and have enough excess material for the plastic surgeons to utilize in later procedures. Still, she was horribly disfigured. No matter what, it will not look natural, because it isn't. Poor thing! I wish her well.

Itself to blame. The woman should have known better than to keep a wild animal.
