March 13 is St. Patrick’s Day and a fabulous hour-long parade down Columbus Drive marked its 55th year celebration at Chicago. As yearly event, big crowd gathered again this year despite touch-and-go weather. The celebration all around downtown began early for some, due in part to rainy weather, but mostly because of the end of the city’s South Side Irish St. Patrick’s Day Parade.
The highlights of parade are the different dance troupes, marching bands, and approximately 70 floats, including ABC7 Chicago’s that entertains the crowds that lined Columbus Drive. The celebration brought out the politicians and those with Irish pride from near and far. Irish Prime Minister Brian Cowen joined the parade of Chicago area dignitaries, including Mayor Daley and Governor Quinn, marching in the afternoon’s festivities.
Tourists were simply amazed with such extravagant and fabulous celebration on street. One constant tourist Michelle Baik said there’s no St. Patty’s Day celebration on the East Coast as much that’s why it’s nice to be in the Midwest. Turning the river green is the Chicago’s big contribution to how you do a parade, one spectator said.
The 55th annual parade is expected to be bigger and better each year as everyone celebrated a part of the Windy City’s heritage.
