David Alexander Paterson is the Governor of New York. He is the first African American to be the governor of New York, and is the second blind governor of any state in America, the first being Bob C. Riley.
Governor David Paterson gave his State of speech on January 6, 2010. He called out the lawmakers and officials for spending too much and almost putting the state of New York in ruins. There is a $7 billion shortfall predicted for this year. So Paterson plans to cap state spending and take away programs which are thought to be wasteful. He plans to change the government so that the people will have more faith in them.
After Paterson’s influential speech, Attorney General Andrew Cuomo showed his investigation into state senator Pedro Espada. He said that Espada was breaking laws by getting funds for nonprofit organizations and not reporting contributions to his campaign. This took away some focus from Gov. Paterson.
Also, recently in Saturday Night Live, they featured a skit that poked fun at Gov. Paterson’s disability. Although everyone knows that David Paterson has achieved many things in his career, and overcome his disability, they still do these skits. Whether they will do damage or actually bring focus to the governor is questionable.
