Diane Downs, now 55, was convicted for murder in 1984.
Facts of the case included her statement before the police that an unknown man had carjacked her and her children Stephen Daniel Downs, Cheryl Lynn Downs and Christie Ann Downs. However, evidences led to the fact that she herself shot her 3 own children wherein Cheryl died.
This was made known after police noticed her calm manner which was quite uncommon for a victim. Also, during a visit to one of her children Christie, the latter’s eyes glazed with fear and her heart rate increased. Investigators also discovered that the gun used to shoot her children was a handgun she herself bought in Arizona. Witnesses also saw Downs’ car being driven very slowly going to the hospital contrary to her claims that she drove at high-speed. It was clear that she didn’t want her children anymore.
But during her conviction in 1984, she was pregnant with a 4th child from an alleged lover and later on gave birth to a baby girl named Rebecca Babcock. In 1987, Downs was the subject of the book titled “Small Sacrifices”, which was made into a movie in 1989. On December 9, 2008 she was eligible for parole but was denied after three hours of interview and thirty minutes of discussion with authorities. She can reapply for parole this year.
