Veteran American actress Dixie Carter – who is well known for her role at TV sitcom Designing Women – died at the age of 70 years old.
Carter is survived by husband/actor Hal Holbrook together with daughters Mary Dixie and Ginna. Carter’s family and even her publicist have refused to talk about how the actress died and the cause of her death. Her husband asked the public to respect their wish and has requested everyone to give them privacy on this family matter.
Dixie Carter had appeared on several movies, television shows and even stage plays. She started her stage career in Memphis, Tennessee with the production of Carousel during the 60’s.
Other than stage shows, Carter became active on television porgrams portraying various characters such as Dorian Cramer on One Life to Live. However, Dixie Carter’s biggest break was during her portrayal of interior designer Julia Sugarbaker in the 1980 TV sitcom Designing Women. The television program lasted for 10 years and made Dixie Carter an icon in television industry.
Dixie Carter had been married three times. First with businessman Arthur Carter with which she had two daughters – and only children – Mary Dixie and Ginna. After 10 years of marriage, she divorced him and married actor George Hearn. She divorced Hearn after 2 years of marriage and got married for the third time in 1984 to actor Hal Holbrook.
Dixie Carter has been an active participant several TV programs and has achieved several awards and nominations for doing so. To honor her legacy in entertainment industry an art center – called “The Dixie” – in Huntingdon, Tennessee is named after her.
