On August 10, 2010, an African-American woman named Jade called Dr. Laura Schlessinger on her radio show and said she was “hypersensitive” to racism. She complained about her husband’s friends’ racist comments about her in their home.

During the five minute on-air conversation with Jade, Schlessinger articulated the N-word eleven times, and seemed to have implied that because the N-word is now somehow commonly mentioned, especially that black people appear to sometimes even use it as a comment of affection, then it shouldn’t automatically be a cause for offense. Schlessinger also told Jade that she had a “chip on [her] shoulder”, and said that if Jade did not have a sense of humor about race, she shouldn’t have entered into an interracial marriage.
Schlessinger opened her show with an apology the following day.
On Wednesday, Schlessinger announced on her website that she was wrong in using the word in her effort to make a philosophical point. She said the right after the conversation she realized that she made a mistake and she was so upset was not able to finish the show.
“I articulated the N-word all the way out — more than one time,” Schlessinger on her site. “And that was wrong. I’ll say it again — that was wrong.”
The public has been raving since the show, launching into arguments of whether or not racism still burns strong and true in society, despite the fact that America now has a black president.
