For its courage to forgive, the family of slain football coach Ed Thomas, became the latest addition to the recipients of the ESPY’s Arthur Ashe Courage Award on Wednesday This award is given every year to personalities who have in their ways shown courage.

Coach Ed Thomas was shot and killed in the high school football team’s locker room of the Aplington-Parkersburg High School in June 2009. His slayer was twenty-four-year-old Mark Becker, a former player of the team that Thomas coached. Instead of being angry for having killed Thomas, the Thomas family chose to forgive the family of Mark Becker.
As a consequence to the crime that he committed, Mark Becker was found guilty of first-degree murder and was given a life sentence on April 14, 2010. A video tribute was shown to honor the late football coach. After the tribute Thomas’ wife Jan and sons Aaron and Todd went onstage to receive the award that was presented by Brett Favre. “It is difficult for a family to be faced with this kind of tragedy but without our faith, I don’t think that there is any way we could get through it.”, Thomas’ son Todd said.
