The recent unveiling of the Faberge Spider means that the name is back in the jewelry business. The nine year hiatus of the Faberge Limited from jewelry with a lot of its business going into toiletries and clothing lines seemed they have forgotten their origins. The Faberge Spider is just bringing its roots back to what the name is really for, beautiful jewelry.
The House of Faberge which rose to prominence in Russia is certainly back to doing what it does best. The Faberge Spider (which is coincidently is shaped like an egg) certainly looks like the ancestor of the first egg jewelry called the Hen Egg commissioned by Czar Alexander III as a gift for her wife. The House of Faberge created another 53 imperial eggs for the Russian court until 1917 when the Bolshevik Revolution started.
In 2007, the Rothschild Faberge Egg, which was made by Peter Carl Faberge for Beatrice Ephrussi de Rothschild, a member of the Rothschild banking family of France was auctioned in Christie’s in London for £8.98 million, a record for a piece of Faberge jewelry.
Undoubtedly, the Faberge Spider (or egg) is an outstanding legacy and a big addition of a collection immensely popular in the jewelry world today. Gustav Faberge, founder of the House of Faberge would be immensely proud.
