The Taiwanese electronics company Foxconn has been lambasted recently in a survey for having poor relationships with their employees. A survey conducted to assess the working condition inside the company says that a lot of the company’s employees have labeled their work environment as a “prison” or a “cage.

Foxconn, which has always been secretive about the things happening inside their factories, is the world’s largest maker of electronic component ranging from mobile phones to computer parts. It has manufacturing facilities in China producing electronic components to support its contracts with American and European companies (like HP, Dell, and Apple). The company is best known as contract product manufacturer for iPods and iPhones for Apple, Inc.
Foxconn has recently been under fire for employee mistreatment, especially on some of their mainland Chinese employees, on several occasions. The relationship between the Taiwanese employers and mainland Chinese employees was said to be very poor that some Chinese employees, especially in Foxconn’s factory in Shenzen, China, committed suicide due to the long working hours, discrimination, and poor working conditions. Although, Foxconn recently raised the wages for all their employees, public scrutiny shows that there is still a lack of working relationship inside their factories.
The recent survey conducted by twenty Chinese universities has labeled Foxconn factories as labor camps. The 83-page report showed that seventeen Foxconn employees committed suicide this year and thirteen of them had died from falling within factory compounds.
In response to the growing protest against them, Foxconn promised to improve the working conditions inside their factories. Apparently, this included putting suicide preventive nets in and around some of its facilities.
