garmin nuvi Garmin Nuvi GPS Units Recalled!Garmin, one of the most popular GPS device manufacturing companies, voluntarily recalled approximately 1.25 million of their Nuvi personal navigation devices, out of which 800,000 units were already sold across the United States.

The recall was announced last Wednesday, August 25, 2010. Garmin had discovered possible overheating problems when some batteries produced by an unnamed third-party battery supplier in a limited date code range were put in Garmin Nuvi models with a specific printed circuit board (PCB) design.

Garmin said that some of the Nuvi may, in some circumstances, pose fire hazards due to overheating. Although there are just less than ten cases related to the alleged fire hazard, and there were no people injured or major property damage, the company still felt the need to recall the devices.

The recalled GPS devices comprise of Nuvi model numbers 200W, 250W, 260W, and 7xx (where xx is a two-digit number).

If you are one of those who happened to purchase one or some of the mentioned Nuvi models, you could return the unit where you purchase it—and do not ever attempt to replace the battery yourself. Though the unit itself would not be replaced, your unit will get a brand new battery replacement. They will also put a space at the top part of the battery to avoid the problem in the future—this replacement service will be done without any charge.
