In honor of the late Jimmy Valvano, Denver Nuggets coach George Karl was awarded the Perseverance Award at the ESPY awards in Los Angeles yesterday, June 14. The Nuggets coach is currently fighting his second battle with cancer. This forced him to let the second half of the last season, including the playoff pass.

Seeing Karl receive the award personally was a very touching scene to watch considering that he is in for the toughest fight in his life. In his acceptance speech he said, “”When I think of Jimmy Valvano, I think of a spirited and passionate man, a man that had positive energy. And he was taken away from us. But the gift that he has given is this cancer research. Sometimes, I don’t think America is aware of cancer as much as they should be. I think right now there is great teamwork to conquer this disease, but we need a national program to cure cancer, to defeat this disease.”
Jimmy Valvano was also a coach, and also a recipient of the perseverance award in 1993. Valvano’s dream was for everyone be united and fight cancer – that is to find a cure for the lifetaking disease and not just a treatment for it.
