Gia Marie Carangi was an American fashion model in the seventies and early eighties. Her professional career wasn’t planned and everything started by accident. In a disco club, a photographer noticed her and took a picture of her. From there, she was able to enter the modeling world. Her pictures spread on different magazines and everybody got hooked on her. And the rest is history.
She became a household name and that she was even given the title as the first supermodel. Many well known fashion photographers wanted to work with her like Francesco Scavullo, Arthur Elgort, Richard Avedon, and Chris von Wangenheim. She was able to travel the world and that her beautiful face had appeared on the covers of famous magazines like of Vogue, Glamour, Harper’s Bazaar and Cosmopolitan.
Unfortunately, Carangi’s fame as an international model didn’t last long. The once supermodel became addicted to drugs, prostitution and eventually got AIDS. She was able to do a last photo shoot before being admitted in the hospital and she didn’t come on screen while she was hospitalized. She was hospitalized for a long time and her mother was the one who took care of her.
Unfortunately, the AIDS spread all over her body. On November 18, 1986 at exactly 10am, Gia died at a hospital in Philadelphia. She died at the age of 26. The saddest part was none of her acquaintances, friends or people in her field attended he funeral.
