The most devastating earthquake in 200 years, the 7.0 magnitude earthquake that shook the country of Haiti continues to strongly challenge its government and citizenry. With aftershocks up to 4.0 on the Reiter Scale, it has managed to also affect surrounding areas, spreading out through the area of the Caribbean. It is the strongest earthquake in history as far as the region is concerned.

Haiti earthquake

The earthquake has managed to raze down both houses and buildings, reducing all to wreckage and dirt. It spared neither poor nor the rich, as hospitals, schools, religious institutions and even notable political seats of power were collapsed or destroyed. Many are left homeless and jobless as well, in the face of this adversity. Haiti’s capital of Port-au-Prince suffers from severed casualties as the city with many of its edifices either ruined or broken. There is no electricity made widely available owing to this disaster as of press time, making things very difficult to cope.

It has unfortunately claimed many lives of the citizens of Haiti. Many roam the dusty streets and braving through the rubble, searching for their friends and family. Up to now, there is no actual body count just yet due to the logistical and technological disadvantages brought by the earthquake. However it is being speculated by the government that the death toll is at hundreds of thousands. It is probably around 100,000 – 300,000.

Rescue missions spearheaded by charitable foreign countries have been initiated. Food, water and medicine, as well as professionals, have been flown into the country to aid the people. The debris of the after quake of the country are also being looked into should there be any remaining survivors trapped. Donations are also being sent in as we speak, as everyone collaborates to help Haiti back on its feet.
