Today, a large earthquake hit Haiti. The earthquake was reported to have a 7.3 magnitude on the Richter scale and although it only lasted for one minute, it has damaged the small island everywhere. Houses and hospitals are broken down and schools and hotels have caved in. The National Palace was much damaged during the quake as well. The Port-au-Prince, the capital of Haiti, was only 10 miles away from the epicenter of the quake and it suffered a lot of the damage. It was the largest earthquake to happen in Haiti in 200 years.
It has been said that it is possible that the whole village of Carrefour has been killed. So far, the reports are unclear. But the death toll is probably quite high, although the numbers are imagined to be in the high thousands. People are still trapped in their houses and other buildings, so the exact number won’t be counted for a while now.
There were over 9000 people at the UN Haiti peacekeeping headquarters during the incident, and many are not found and remain missing. Now, it is dark there and it is harder for people to search for more victims. Everyone has gathered in the public square to sing and to comfort each other. They are praying and pleading for doctors. Funds for rescue and recuperation missions are being sent in from around the world.
