After having declared what could be interpreted as a racially offensive comments against now U.S. President Barack Obama, Senator Harry Reid has sent an apology to the White House, more than a year after the incident. The controversial comment was declared to explain how Obama could’ve managed to defeat John McCain in the 2008 presidential bet. It is as follows ‘He’s a “light-skinned” African-American who lacks a “Negro dialect, unless he wants to have one.” It caused an uproar against the formerly popular senator, which has managed to drastically affect his popularity both before and at present. The line was featured in a book authored by Mark Halperin and John Heilemann entitled ‘Game Change: Obama and the Clintons, McCain and Palin, and the Race of a Lifetime.
President Obama quickly accepted the apology and has considered the issue a literal closed book already between them. Reid has served the Democratic party for a long time, having started his political career with the party during the mid 1960s. He is known for his policies on gun control, stem cell research and restricted abortion rights for women, as reflected by his principles and beliefs towards a fit life.
Despite this open act of reconciliation and closure, it has done nothing to bring back the former charisma that Reid held over his constituents. Reid is currently suffering from poor ratings which seem forecast a very difficult time for the incumbent senator for possible re-election. For this, it seems to make more sense that this move was political in nature to further seal the deal of White House support to help prop up his chances of making it this November.
To help his image, Senator Reid has launched a campaign to promote himself to the Nevadans in the hopes of gaining their votes.
