Bernard “The Executioner” Hopkins dominated American great boxer Roy Jones Jr. in all 12 rounds to win the match via Unanimous decision at Mandalay Bay Center in Las Vegas, USA.
The rematch known as “Hopkins Jones: The Rivals” or Bernard Hopkins vs. Roy Jones II has been brewing for over 17 years with several meetings on both parties whether to approve the fight or not.
The first clash between Hopkins and Jones Jr. happened in May 22, 1993 in Washington when a vacant IBF middleweight belt was up for grabs. Hopkins faced Jones but lost the match via unanimous decision. On Nov. 2008, Hopkins’ camp claimed that they were trying to plan another match with Jones but the latter keep on dodging Hopkins claiming the he already had beaten him. On Hopkins’ defense he said that he had defeated two guys who had beaten Jones.
Finally, on September of 2009 the 2 boxers have agreed to schedule the fight by around 2nd Quarter of 2010.
Today, the Executioner has proven himself on the ring when he completely outplayed Roy Jones Jr. gaining the judges’ decision with scores set at 117-110, 117-110 and 118-109. The question now here is: Will there be a 3rd match between these 2 contenders? For sure, Jones and Hopkins’ fans will love it if a 3rd match would materialize since each fighter now stands evenly at one game a piece. With both fighters now in their 40s we hope it will happen soon.
