North Carolina is in a state of emergency as of today, September 2, 2010, as announced by President Barack Obama and Governor Bev Perdue. The declaration followed after confirmation that hurricane Earl is getting stronger and will hit North Carolina.
Hurricane Earl with winds of 145 miles per hour brought schools halting classes and evacuation activities from the coastal area. A sea turtle nests on one beach were moved to safety and the crew of Navy’s USS Cole hastily returned home before the hurricane strike. It had hit Cape Cod and Nova Scotia during the weekend. Meteorologists also forecasted that New York City may be hit by winds of at least 39 mph.
According to the spokesman of Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency, Peter Judge, “Everyone is poised and ready to pull the trigger if Earl turns west, but our hope is that this thing goes out to sea and we’re all golfing this weekend.” By Wednesday night, hurricane Earl is already a Category 4 with winds of 140 mph. It was hoped it will not get stronger and becomes Category 5 which is the most powerful category with winds of 155 mph or higher.
Governors of neighbouring states Virginia and Maryland also declared state of emergency.
