One of the forefathers of Marxist politics in his country, the veteran politician Jyoti Basu of Bengal is believed to be dead. News of his passing has yet to be confirmed but it has been said that the cause of death was a pneumonic attack.
This coincides with the fact that the former chief minister was admitted to the intensive cardiac unit of the Salt Lake AMRI Hospital in Kolkata due to severe chest infection last January 1, 2010. Since his admittance to the private hospital, reports about his conditions stated his health was diminishing and prior to the release of his death, Basu was put on the ventilator today with his doctors on watch for any changes. The seasoned leader had been put on a liquid diet and was responding to his medications until Wednesday came and his health turned for the worse. He had complained about breathing difficulties. An evening medical report to confirm these leaks should be due soon to confirm this rumour. Doctors are still observing him up to now in case there are any signs of life.
During his better days, Basu was a leading figure in the Communist Party of India (Marxist) representing West Bengal, India. He is well respected and known for his service as the Chief Minister of West Bengal, being in office for more than two decades. He would have served longer if not for health reasons and was succeeded by Buddhadeb Bhattacharya. Life after the highest rank in West Bengal for the politician spelled duties with the party itself, being part of the Central Committee and as a Special Invitee to the Politburo.
His followers send their prayers of gratitude and condolences, should the rumor prove to be true, for this very influential figure.
