The Kennedy Center Honors will be shown this December 29, 2009. It is an annual ceremony which honors those who have a lifetime’s contribution to the performing arts. It started out in 1978, created by George Stevens, Jr. and Nick Vanoff, and is held in Washington DC for a whole weekend. At the end of the event there is the performance and honoring of the honorees at the Kennedy Center Opera House.
This year, it was filmed on December 6, 2009, which happened to be one of the honoree’s birthdays, Dave Brubeck, who turned 89 this year. His sons performed that night for the honorees and the President and his wife, with musical pieces from “Take Five” and “Blue Rondo a la Turk”. It was hosted by Caroline Kennedy and the performance was introduced by Herbie Hancock.
Meryl Streep also appeared on the show as well as her co-star Robert DeNiro. She showed how much good actors work to make the shows and movies magical. They salute to Martin Scorsese, Ed Norton, and Ben Stiller.
There was also another segment dedicated to Mel Brooks, showing his work and all the singers who sang his songs like Frank Langella, Jack Black, and Harry Connick Jr. Aretha Franklin saluted Grace Bumbry and showed her work well and knew much about Bumbry. And lastly, they honored Bruce Springsteen by singing his songs and looking back at his career.
