It is indeed a joyful celebration for the 26yr old mom and former World #1 Tennis Star, Kim Clijsters. She dominated both sets, 7-5 6-3, against Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark. This is a remarkable victory for Clijsters when she bested other Tennis contenders including the top-notch Williams Sisters (Serena and Venus).
Clijsters has been world No. 1 multiple times on her career. She grabbed it first on 2003 and has won 35 career singles titles, including reaching 4 major finals. She temporarily left the tournament for 2 years (got married and had a baby) before deciding to make a comeback on March of 2009. This is only her 3rd tournament since her return to the WTA.
There were a lot of speculations over Clijsters’ return, How would she play? Is she still good? Can she keep up with other players? Well, she proved them all wrong. Among the list of amazing feats Clijsters shown on this Tournament are:
1. First Wild card player to win the US Open
2. First mom (since the 1980 Wimbledon Champion: Evonne Cawley ) to win a major title
3. Defended her US Open title, back in 2005
4. And of course, beating both Williams sisters (and a controversial ending for Serena)
Men’s Singles Update
On the Men’s Semi Final round, Rafael Nadal of Spain and Juan Martin Del Potro from Argentina started the action at Arthur Ashe stadium. Del Potro, the 6’6 giant, completely, hands-down dominated Nadal with score 6-2 6-2 6-2. Nadal’s shot angles and drop shots couldn’t keep up with Del Potros’ heavy return swings. The crowd obviously threw their support for Nadal as they gave words of encouragement and hoping for a comeback win and finally watch a Nadal-Federer Championship duel. Unfortunately, it never happened.
The 20 yr. old Del Potro has swept Nadal, in a full swing at this year’s US Open. But could he do the same with current World # 1 Roger Federer? Fed advanced to the Finals when he defeated Novak Djokovic, the 22-yr old player from Serbia with score 7-6 7-5 7-5. We can only speculate up to this point on what is going to happen. But digging to the past matches between Fed and Nadal, even the world # 1 couldn’t dominate Nadal the way Del Potro did yesterday. So what “ammo” Fed has on his guns to be able to break thru and clinch this title match? This is an interesting match to see.
Up to this point we don’t know if Nadal suffered and endured his abdominal strain or get exhausted over the entire tournament. Anything is possible up to this point. This Men’s Singles finale is a “got to be”, “have to be” tennis match. Will it be a Sweet 16 (16 Grand Slam titles) for Federer or a victory for the young Argentine?
Don’t miss this one of a kind match. Watch it live! in the Philippines on Sky Cable via Balls TV at 4A.M. on Sept. 15
