Breast Cancer is one of the most leading causes of cancer death in women(particularly placing second from Lung Cancer). Melanie Shouse was a breast cancer patient but definitely not like other cancer patients. When she first noticed a lump in her breast, she did not immediately sought medical assistance due to her medical insurance problems. Her breast cancer was only diagnosed on its fourth stage.

What is so special about Melanie’s case is the fact that all throughout her battle for her own health and survival, she was also fighting for the others welfare. Despite having a medical insurance, her most needed treatment (chemotherapy) was not granted to her by the insurance company. And this (in addition to clean energy, economic reform and public transportation) is what her advocacy is all about. Whenever she has chemotherapy sessions, she rode the bus to and from the hospital. Ask any patients who has undergone a chemotherapy and they will all claim that this treatment barely left them energy to last until they got home. However, Melanie’s dear heart still gave her enough strength to pick up a sign or banner and join a picket line after her chemo treatment.

This extraordinary women who knew she could make a difference wanted to fight for a health reform that would help and free American families from insurance premiums that instead of aiding them only leaves them in fear and insecurity due to canceled coverage.

After Melanie’s death on January 30, 2010, President Barrack Obama included her in his speech as one of his avid supporters. He made immeasurable efforts for the president’s campaign because she believed that Obama can help not only her but others who are also struggling for positive changes. She was cremated wearing her Obama shirt.
