Posted by It is hard to imagine how Nate Montana feels right now when people say that he has to live up to his family name. The back-up quarterback for the Notre Dame’s Fighting Irish debuted today against the Michigan’s Wolverines. Starting quarterback Dayne Crist had to be removed from play because of an eye injury in the first quarter. Tommy Rees replaced Crist but had to be relieved because of turnovers, and Montana was tapped to replace him on the football field. But Nate Montana couldn’t deliver.
Nate Montana, 20, came to Notre Dame from Pasadena City College as a walk on. He is the third child of legendary NFL superstar and Hall of Famer quarterback Joe Montana. Nate’s younger brother Nick Montana also plays the same position as Nate does. He is currently the starting quarterback in his senior year at Oaks Christian in Westlake Village.
During high school, Nate Montana has always been on the bench as secondary or third option. When he went to college as a freshman for Notre Dame, he was so far below the depth chart that he opted to transfer in another school (Pasadena City College) to increase his playing time. He went back to Notre Dame as a walk-on and was given the back–up position to Dayne Crist.
A lot of people expected that Nate Montana bearing the family name Montana can play like his dad used to do. But today, people had expected too much. It isn’t in the name it is in the skill and experience of the individual. Young as he is, he can yet prove them wrong.
