Posted by New Jersey’s Newark Airport experiences a lockdown as a security breach in one of it’s terminals was breached. The breach happened when a person went through the exit of Terminal C, bypassing security protocol at 5:30 that afternoon. The said individual had passed from the public side to the sterile side. It has still not been determined whether this individual had simply lost his way, came from one of the arriving flights or came from outside. For this, flights were cancelled and the now stricter security measures were enforced. The terminals were cleared out, passengers were re-screened and the surveillance tapes were reviewed for anything suspicious. Aiding the airport employees and security in this search are the Port Authority police.
Passengers were asked to fall in line for a full body search through frisking with their hand carried luggage checked as well. Children were not spared of the frisking during the process. Extra precaution was enacted when it came to dealing with nationals from countries that have been classified as ‘state sponsors of terrorism’ and other ‘countries of interest’.
The security breach put to action the newly implemented protocol that had been promised since the recently thwarted Christmas Day bombing, roughly a week after since then. The could-have been bomber, Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab of Nigerian descent, possessed links with known terrorist organizations. He had managed to smuggle in PETN explosives on a flight from Amsterdam to Detroit.
Investigation regarding the breach is currently on-going.
The Newark Airport is one of the major airports for the city of New York. It’s located in New Jersey and services more than 30 million passengers in and out of it’s terminals. Catering to both local and domestic flights, It is one of the busiest airports in the USA: ranking tenth in the said category.
