The former football player of the University of South Florida and his friends Will Bleakley and NFL players Corey Smith and Marquise Cooper set on sail at the Gulf on March 1, 2009. However a cold front was moving across the Gulf from New Orleans that brought gust winds that were at a 40 miles per hour speed. Later that night the temperature dropped to twenty degrees.
The anchor was caught on something underwater and the boat capsized. This started their struggle to stay alive. Schuyler saw how his friends died. According to him, it was Corey Smith, his bestfriend, who was the last to go after his lifejacket ripped. The coast guard found Schuyler after nearly forty-eight hours. Unfortunately, they could not recover the bodies of Schuyler’s friends.
“You know, people come out, you’re a celebrity, you know. I’m not a damn celebrity. Give me a break. You’re a hero? If I had another person here with me, you know, I’d be a hero. You know, if I was able to keep them alive, maybe,” Schuyler told Real Sports. Schuyler allowed himself to be interviewed because there are some facts that he wanted to set straight as these facts were inaccurately reported by media outlets.
