The recent culmination of No Pants Day Subway Ride for 2010 managed to prove that with each passing year, more and more are becoming aware about the holiday and even participate in it by simply purposely forgetting one’s pants for a whole day. The 2009 No Pants Day garnered an estimate of 1200 participants in New York alone. This year, the city of New York garnered 3000 participants, more than double of the previous.
A variation of the well known No Pants Day, this practice is sponsored and advocated by Improv Everywhere, a comedy-inclined performance group based in New York. The event invites people from all walks of life to ride the subway literally without their pants on. In addition to the challenge of being able to survive a full day in nothing more than your underwear in public, this practice just has to coincide with the harsh Winter climate of the metropolis.
No Pants Day which started mostly as a prank has become an annual event. The event has it’s beginnings two decades ago, estimated to be around the late 1980s. No exact date or place or origin of the practice turned event has been noted.
To put it simply, the principle behind No Pants Day is to make life a little more interesting, even for a day It plays along the lines of taboo and humor, as it reveals what should not be seen and contradicts everyday need to put one’s pants on.
