Oakland judge charged former Bay Area Rapid Transit Police Officer Johannes Mehserle with involuntary manslaughter Thursday in Los Angeles City Hall.

Johannes Mehserle was the BART police officer who shot and killed the Twenty-two year old unarmed blackman Oscar J. Grant III on New Year’s day 2009. The case against Johannes Mehserle was highly controversial that many people hoped for a stronger murder charge.
Johannes Mehserle disclosed that instead of his gun, he was actually going for his taser, when he shot Oscar J. Grant III at the back.
Residents of Oakland, California rallied all year round about the trial. Police authorities and city officials had prepared for protests and riots in the city as the residents expressed their hate, disappointment and protest now that the verdict had been read in the Los Angeles courtroom.
Police advised other residents and business establishment owners to take the necessary precautions like parking their cars in garages and on secure locations and putting wooden barriers on glass windows. The verdict caused tension and unrest among people in the area of downtown streets in Oakland, California. Police authorities and city official closed many streets due to riots.
