The mega New England discount chain store, Ocean State Job Lot will not open in Ryan’s Market, the old Wickford, North Kingstown building, based from a confirmed reports. One can recall four months ago, OSJ PEP Investments bought Ryan’s Market at 70 Brown St. in the middle of Wickford but to the disappointment of the management, for almost two years, the 5,200 square foot building has remained dark and empty.
The North Kingstown, Rhode Island store founded in 1886, was one of the oldest operating businesses in the Wickford community.
On the other hand, according to Wikipedia, Ocean State Job Lot, headquartered in North Kingstown, Rhode Island, is a chain of approximately 96 discount stores operating in Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Connecticut, New Hampshire, Maine, Vermont, and Upstate New York. The chain primarily acquires common brand-name goods whose manufacturer is willing to sell them at a loss following overstocking or discontinuation serving as a close-out company similar to Big Lots and Christmas Tree Shops.
Dave’s Marketplace and Stop & Shop have been opening new stores in the area as per latest report and it made the competition tougher. A new 34,000 square foot Ocean State Job Lot is set to open mid-May in Cranston. Compare that to the 5,200 square foot Wickford store, and its obvious the mega discount OSJL with 92 stores throughout New England and New York, needs more space than what the old Ryan’s Market can afford.
