The FBI received a bomb threat from an anonymous email sender this Tuesday morning saying that explosives were placed in the four buildings of Ohio State University. These buildings were: William Oxtey Thompson Library, McPherson Chemical Lab, Smith Laboratory, and Scott Laboratory.

According to reports, at 8:19am, the campus security was notified by the FBI about the threat. By 8:41am, the university had warned the students, staff and faulty to stay away from the buildings and have declared the “Bucketeye Alert”. Classes were canceled until the searches have finished.

After a few hours of searching consisting of bomb-sniffing dogs, no bombs were found in the buildings and have declared the campus free from explosives. McPherson Chemical Lab and Smith Laboratory were declared safe and re-opened at 5:00pm. Scott Lab was opened at 6:00pm and the main library at 9:00pm. During the time of the search, all three streets in the campus were closed to the public.

Up until now the FBI or the police has no comment about the incident or about the anonymous email sender, but had just said that they have never recovered anything in the search. The public safety office, though, said that the university puts highest priority on the safety of the students, staff ans faculty even though no explosives were found. According to the assistant vice president and director of public safety, Vernon Baisden, “Throughout the day our public safety forces have meticulously checked the affected buildings to insure that our students continue to have a safe learning environment.”

This incident is quite alarming considering that this is not the first time a threat was done in an Ohio-related school. Just last Thursday, Ohio-affiliate Kenyon College went into a lockdown overnight because a truck that was owned by a missing woman was found nearby, and people are thinking it might be a bomb or a threat to the school. The threat was proven false as it was proved that it was just a truck. But, the fact that there are threats like this is actually scaring people, especially when they are off-guard. I hope these threats would stop, especially when it involves innocent people such as students and teachers.
