The rest of USA may have been celebrating Mardi Gras, but Tuesday was the day for eating Paczki especially in the city of Hamtramck (whose population is estimated to be 21,500)surrounded by Milwaukee, Detroit. On this year, the last day before the beginning of Lenten season(Ash Wednesday) is February 16, that day when Milwaukeeans celebrated the Fat Tuesday.
As with Mardi Gras, Fat Tuesday or Paczki day is the concluding indulgent feast before the observance of the Catholic Lent. Indulgent in the sense that people will enjoy themselves eating ‘paczki’, a chubby fried donut which is filled with cream, or gel made from a variety of fruits such as a raspberry.
Paczki Day or Fat Tuesday is actually a Polish tradition which was originally done in purpose of using up all the lard, butter and sugar which are mostly forbidden during the catholic season of Lent.
But why in Milwaukee which is located in the United States? Decades ago, Polish people migrated to the US cities like Chicago, New York and Detroit and with them they brought this tradition. Today, more than 60, 00 of those residing in Milwaukee still claim that they have a Polish ancestry so they still celebrate Paczki day with jelly donuts. Other Polish immigrants who have resided in other cities aside from Hamtramck and Detroit celebrate Paczki day on Fat Thursday.
