For the second time, Poppy Flowers, Van Gogh’s painting, has been retrieved from an Italian couple just hours after it was stolen. It was seen cut from the frame while on display at the Mahmoud Khalil museum.

The painting measures 1 foot by 1 foot, and is believed to cost approximately $55 million, which was painted by Van Gogh in 1887, three years before he died. The painting was stolen by two thieves while it was at an open market in Cairo. But after a few hours, the painting was taken away by security when the two Italians were at an airport in Cairo. Van Gogh’s painting has been stolen from the same museum, prior to this incident, around 30 years ago.
Other than Van Gogh’s work, nine other paintings of the 19th Century ruler of Egypt, Mohammed Ibrahim Pasha, were stolen as well one year before. This has brought so much embarrassment to the museum since this only proves that they cannot protect the works under their management. Art organizations may demand for the removal of the Poppy Flowers painting from the museum’s care, since this has happened multiple times already, to keep it safe, and prevent it from being stolen again.
