After being put off numerous times due to injuries, the UFC 108, a mixed martial arts event sponsored by the titular Ultimate Fighting Championship finally pushed through last January 2, 2010. It was held at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. The main fight for the night was between Rashad Evans and Thiago Silva. In the fight, Evans won against Silva after three rounds through a unanimous vote.
This fight was especially important for Evans as he has previously been defeated by Lyoto ‘The Dragon’ Machida, effectively making him lose his UFC Light – Heavyweight title. Should he win this fight against Silva, he would be once again on the road to gaining back his title. He is looking into going against Quinton ‘Rampage’ Jackson soon.
Rashad Evans was on the offensive from the beginning of the fight, coming in with jabs and making use of his grappling skills. He was keen on showing his strong wrestling background while being able to display his striking and jiu jitsu technique. He is also quick and swift to attack, giving him an advantage. Evans was noted to have deviated from his usual strategy of stances and strikes that evening.
However his opponent Thiago Silva wasn’t also without his own set of strengths.
Compared to the physically smaller Evans, the Brazillian mixed martial arts fighter is in possession of a black jiu-jitsu belt. He is able to go on the offensive, being able to capitalize on his sheer strength and prowess once in the ring. Silva is also able to bounce back into the fight quickly, resilient enough to avoid damage.
But as the fight had turned out, Rashad Evans had turned out to be the better man. All judges gave him a score of 29-28 for the fight.
