Posted by If there ever was a film that effectively illustrated how a war can affect people, it is the 1946 American drama film entitled ‘The Best Years of Our Lives’. It is an excellent movie whose plot revolves around three servicemen who tried to piece and put back their lives together when they came home after participating in World War II.
How the successful film was conceived is actually a short story in itself. The wife of Samuel Goldwyn incidentally read an August 7, 1944 Time magazine article about the difficulties gone through by war veterans as they return to their former civilian lives. This was where Goldwyn got his motivation to produce a film with such concept. The then inspired producer hired a former war correspondent MacKinlay Kantor to write the story that was initially published as a novel entitled ‘Glory for Me’. When Robert Sherwood wrote the screenplay, the film project was eventually pushed through with the direction of William Wyler.
This USA and UK highest grossing film has definitely taken the public by storm especially when it gathered and won seven major Academy Awards in 1947: The awards were for Best Motion Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Writing (Screenplay), Best Supporting Actor, Best Film Editing, Best Music (Score of a Dramatic or Comedy Picture) and also an Honorary Award. Yet again in 1947 it won two Golden Globe awards plus a BAFTA award in 1948.
