headache thumb Top Ten Natural Tips for Headache Relief Headache is one of the most common ailments people suffer everyday. Everyone suffers headache from time to time while some gets it more than others do. There are different types of headaches i.e. Migraine Headache – a “pulsating” and severe type of headache which women suffers more than men. Different factors are said to trigger the onset of a headache i.e. stress, dehydration, emotional tension, prolong exposure to sun etc.

Whatever definition we search in the web for the term Headache, it is always synonymous to the word pain/discomfort. I guess you remember very well the day you had a headache right? You can’t work, can’t concentrate, you’re in a bad mood and you look terrible. Usually, health experts and doctors recommend analgesics, aspirin, ibuprofen, acetaminophen, paracetamol or naproxen to cure headaches. Probably you heard them too, nothing against it, but sometimes it doesn’t give the relief we want.

The question now I guess is: Are there any good Natural cures/remedies for my headaches?

The good news is YES! there are. Now, we’ll give you the “Top 10 Natural Tips for Headache relief” that you can use every single headache you experience. We remind everyone that we listed several headache cures since every person is different and that one remedy may not be as effective to others.

1. Lemon – lemon juice is a good natural remedy for treating headaches. Try mixing lemon juice in a cup of tea to ease the hammering burden in your temples. The crust of lemon can also be used to naturally treat headaches. Crush the lemon peelings using a mortar then apply it to your forehead/temples.

2. Iced Coffee – remember what mom used to tell us when we experienced headaches “apply ice packs to your temples”. By drinking iced coffee, it is said that the components in it help “bulging” veins in your head shrink down. This component is called vasoconstrictors. And it explains why regular coffee drinkers experience headaches on times they drink coffee less than usual.

Tip: So guys remember, this is one good reason to enjoy your frapuccino as well as why Starbucks and Seatle’s Best will never go bankrupt.

3. Exercise – many health advocates said that people who experience headaches should do “mild” exercises such as walking – outdoor walking is great. Other alternative would be walking around your house or on a treadmill. Exercise has several benefits to our body such as good blood circulation, release of toxins, initiate release of endorphin (known as “natural pain relievers”) and others. So, the next time you experience headache instead of grunting inside your home, try walking around the house, or within the neighborhood with your dog. However, do not push yourself too much else, it could make your headache worse.

4. Apples – we’re all familiar with the phrase “An apple a day keeps the doctor away”. Now, here’s a good reason why you should believe on that.

It is said that eating an apple with an “empty” stomach every morning for a week would cure almost all types of headaches. I haven’t tried it but I know, apples are good sources of vitamins, minerals and carbohydrates. Plus, it is a good stimulant (sometimes effective than coffee). With this new knowledge in mind, taking it every morning gives you 3-in-1 “apple goodness” namely Energy (carbohydrates and vitamins), headache cure and Stimulant. Sounds good huh?

5. Water – sometimes, headaches are caused by “dehydration” and insufficient supply of water in body. We are required to drink 8-10 glasses everyday, this is the general rule although one can and should drink more. This is true especially during hot/summer season when your body easily utilizes fluids and needs to be replenished immediately.

Tip: How not to forget drinking water?

Have “personal” containers/ water receptacles with 2-4 liters capacity. Everyday what you would like to do is drink all of its content. This way, you don’t have to gauge if you have “enough” nor forget to drink. Plus, you could bring the container/receptacle at work/ in your office.

6. Massage – this is one of the natural remedies you can do yourself or with someone. With someone: ask him/her to kneed across your shoulders and the back of your neck (to ease the tightness feeling in those area). Next, have them press on the base of the your skull using their fingers, and slowly release.

Yourself: rotate your fingers over your scalp. Put pressure on the webbed part of your hand between your finger and thumb. Various massages can also ease Migraine headache. You can search the web for various body massages. It’s a good way to help your body relax and ease the burden from strenous work.

7. Sleep – one of the primary causes of migraine/headache is not having adequate sleep. Health experts say that one should have 8-10 hours of sleep. While this maybe true, it is good to note the “quality” of sleep an individual gets is more important. Having 5-6 hours of deep sleep is better than longer hours of average sleep. You’ll know the difference. You feel more relax, energetic and in good mood having quality hours of sleep.

8. Yoga/medidation – you probably know that Indians and Chinese are great advocates of practicing yoga/medidation right? Yep,Yoga is believed to ease tension headaches and prevent headaches triggered by stress. You can practice it by going in a quiet, serene room then relax your jaw and take a few deep breaths. It would be better if you practice “deep belly breathing” to stimulate relaxation response while doing meditation. Also, you don’t have to do yoga in cross-sit position with hands in “praying” position or buddha-like. I’m not against it if you’re an advocate, but it isn’t necessary.

9. Aromatherapy – some studies have shown that peppermint oil may be as powerful as over-the-counter pain relievers in treating tension headaches. You can try this: dab a little amount on your temples and the back of your neck then rub it gently. Eucalyptus oil is another good alternative, but could be less effective. You can also try, sandlewood, lavender or combinations of these ingredients.

Tip: Take a little caution while buying these items from stores/herbal shops. Buy only those with quality items and trusted brand names or you might end up making your headache worse.

10. Head gear – if you’re wearing a hat, headband, helmet, cap, goggles or sunglasses and experiencing headache try removing them. Of course, you don’t want to remove your helmet while in a construction site or while riding a motorcycle (it’s silly and dangerous). Headaches can be triggered by “external compression” caused by those head accessories. A person with a migraine usually suffers headache caused by this factor.

There you have it! We can list more but for now, you can use some of these tips to relieve yourself from that pesky and nasty headache ruining your day. If you have any suggestions and/or headache cures to recommend feel free to write in the comments.
