One of UFC’s strongest grappler, Jon Fitch succeeded in defeating equally tough contender Thiago Alves via unanimous decision during the UFC 117 Welterweight bout. Moreover, Fitch will have another chance to grab the UFC welterweight title against the strong and swift Georges “Rush” St. Pierre.

A wrestler from Purdue University, Jon Fitch dominated Thiago Alves in all three rounds. It was an action-packed evening all the way from the first round when Fitch had taken down Alves multiple times. Fitch continued to show Alves his wrestling skills onwards to the second and third round. Thiago seemed dumbfounded and confused on which technique to implement in order to fend-off Fitch’s grappling advantage.
In between the rounds, Fitch had told his coaches that Alves “felt weak” in the clinch. The reason was probably due to Thiago’s cutting of weight which if true can largely affect his performance in the entire match. He showed some agility and burst in offense but those were not enough to stop Jon Fitch’s attacks.
In the end, Jon Fitch wins all three judges’ score card with the score of 30-27. With this win, Fitch is in good position to get a chance to fight for the welterweight title. Though, he will need to wait until December as Josh Koscheck will be the first to fight GSP for the title inside the octagon.
