It hasn’t been long since the horrible events of 9/11 and the scar of the attack still hurts until today. On December 25, 2009 a Nigerian man who claimed to be instructed by Al-Qaeda to attempt a terrorist attack on the Northwest Airlines plane just as it was about to land in Detroit. Thankfully, there were vigilant passengers about and they smelled the smoke and heard what sounded like firecrackers then decided to stop him.
The plane was Flight 253 and it had 278 passengers and 11 crew members on board. As people started hearing popping noises, a few people jumped on the man and stopped him from doing further damage. The suspect got his legs burned, which shows that the explosives were probably strapped to his legs when he set them off. The suspect was identified as Umar Farouk Abdul Mutallab, a 23 year old Nigerian engineering student from the University College of London. He tried to set up a bomb, presumably with an injection full of chemicals to set it off.
Abdul Mutallab and other passengers who were injured because of the attempted attack were sent to the hospital and are now receiving treatment. President Barrack Obama was told of this news at his Hawaiian vacation spot and is constantly being updated. As to whether or not the suspect really was instructed by Al-Qaeda or just inspired by them, no one knows the exact details.
