We know there are games that are to die for when it comes to playing it. But it doesn’t have to be literally where you kill the person out of your addiction to it. In Jacksonville, Florida, this was the case of a 22-year-old mother.
According to The Florida Times Union, Alexander Tobias was arrested last January for killing her 3-month-old son Dwayne Lee Edmondson because of Farmville. It turned out that the baby was crying and Tobias became irritated with it as it was disturbing her play in Farmville. In her irritation, she got her son and shook him. Afterwards, she smoked first “to compose herself” and then came back to shake his son again. Tobias told the investigators that it could be the baby hit his head while she was shaking him.
Last October 27, she pleaded guilty of second-degree murder in front of Circuit Judge Adrian G. Soud and is facing a minimum of 25 years in prison and will still have to attend future court appearances. She also has the sentencing hearing scheduled for December where it will be decided by Goud as to whether to bring her sentence up to life imprisonment or not. This is so because the punishment for second-degree murder is life imprisonment. So, yes, she can really go to prison.
For those who still don’t know, Farmville is a virtual farm game developed by Zynga where you can have a virtual farm to grow your plants, fruits and vegetables, expand your farm, and design it in whatever way you want, which makes it more addicting. It can be played through the social networking website, Facebook, which has 61 million registered users.
This was actually very shocking news for everyone, especially those who are playing Farmville. I, for one, am playing the virtual farm game and, even though I’m not addicted to it, I’m scared to even continue it for fear that I might end up like her. But, there are others who believe that Farmville was not responsible for the killing of the 3-month-old baby, but rather the fault of the mother because she could not control her addiction to Farmville and does not want to be interrupted. This is rather ironic though because Farmville, according to AllFacebook.com, “is a cooperative, non-violent game and one that withstands interruptions easily—the antithesis of a first-shooter”, so you can leave anytime as long as you plant your seeds.
I, too, do not blame Farmville for what happened because the mother got so addicted to the game that she somehow forgot reality and her loved ones. It is actually up to the person on how he or she will control his or her addiction so that it would not lead to violence.
