We’re already way passed the second week of this year and for AMD, that’s already a long time to reveal its flagship video card, the AMD Radeon HD 7950, in line with its premium “Tahiti” GPU architecture stacking nicely with its budgeted brethren — AMD Radeon HD 7770. This series is the first in the industry to use 28nm process technology whereas the green company will be the only manufacturer of these chips until April. Speaking of dates, according to insiders, 7950 will have its release by the end of this month in United States.
Interestingly, Xbitlabs already posted its thorough review for the muscle video card. And just to give you a summary, the 6970-successor will have a GPU frequency of 925MHz / 300MHz for 3D and 2D; 2048 shader processors, 29.6 Gigapixels for max fillrate, 3GB memory, 384mb bus width, 264GB/s memory bandwith; supports GDDR 5 / PCI-Express X16 interface and, your PSU should be able to crank 550W of power at least for its requirement. Other goodies include dual-link DVI-I, HDMI out and two display ports featuring AMD Eyefinity with DisplayPort 1.2 enabling the card to support multi-stream transport so you can view a video for example up to six monitors simultaneously – this technology is also implemented on all AMD HD 7000 series GPUs. If you are using HD 6970, you know 7970’s innards are better, but just to give you a quick comparison, here’s a screenshot.
As a wrap-up, our reviewers concluded the new video-card is the new fastest single-GPU in the world (how about HD 7970?) thanks to its Tahiti architecture using 28nm fabrication which obviously increased its overall performance while decreasing its power consumption unlike the HD 6970. However, it’s notable to say the beast still has a temper, and could be a little hot and loud when being used. Likewise, this is something we expect for a video-card on this class and obviously, purchasing a liquid-cooled casing will make the graphics card more efficient.
For those who are interested, the new king of the hill will fork out $549, which is understandable being the only product in the market supporting such technology. Meanwhile, we heard that Nvidia’s Kepler series (its 28nm GPUs) will only be available on the second quarter this year giving AMD several months to celebrate its victory again.
